GAP to the Point Design Bike Facilities

Mackin completed design of approximately 0.7 miles of the missing connection of the Great Allegheny Passage (GAP) bike trail from the Smithfield Street Bridge to Point State Park. Contracted by the City of Pittsburgh Department of Mobility and Infrastructure (DOMI). The design used Smithfield Street, Fort Pitt Boulevard, Wood Street, Third Avenue, Stanwix Street, Penn Avenue, and Liberty Avenue, accessing Point State Park at the corner of Liberty Avenue and Commonwealth Place. The design consists of adding two-way cycle tracks, buffered bike lanes and bicycle shared lanes. The design also includes three concrete raised bus platforms with raised bike lanes, a bicycle traffic signal and the sharing of bus lanes with bicycles in Pittsburgh’s Golden Triangle. The project received federal funding and was bid with PennDOT’s oversight through ECMS. Mackin also provided construction consultation for the project through the PennDOT Project Collaboration Center (PPCC).

In 2020, People for Bikes voted Mackin’s ‘GAP to the Point’ Bike Lane as the 3rd best new bikeway project in America.
