H&BT Trail Bridge Rehabilitation

Mackin completed bridge rehabilitation design and shop drawing reviews for the H&BT Trail’s 310 linear foot bridge project over the Juniata River in Bedford County, PA.

The bridge deck was designed using Fiber Reinforced Plastic (FRP) deck panels, a strong and light weight material capable of being hauled to the remote site and quickly installed. The deck panels were designed to carry the pedestrian load as well as an H10 truck load; the steel posts for the safety railing were also designed to withstand a collision load from the H10 truck. The deck panels, 25 feet long and 13 feet wide, were pre-constructed in the shop and installed on the bridge with small equipment. The bridge deck was installed in just four days, followed by the completion of the railing and trail approaches.

The project was co-administered through the State DCNR and PennDOT using C2P2 and TAP funding and included trail and trailhead design to provide visitors access to the corridor. The completion of this bridge links the 10 mile H&BT Trail together — connecting the towns of Riddlesburg, Hopewell Township, and Cypher; and stands ready to extend the project southward toward the PA Turnpike at Everett, PA.

The project was designed and engineered by Mackin and constructed by Broad Top Township’s Department of Public Works.
