Mon-Fayette Expressway (Uniontown to Brownsville Segment)

Prior to completion of the Mon/Fayette Transportation Project (Uniontown to Brownsville) there were no direct roadways between I-68 in Morgantown, I-70 in Washington County, and Route 51 in the Pittsburgh South Hills. Access was poor to Monongahela Valley towns such as Brownsville in Fayette County and Charleroi and Monessen in Washington County, and economic development was stifled. The area’s transportation system was dominated by substandard 2 lane roads, many of which did not meet current design or safety criteria.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission selected Mackin for design and construction services of this segment of the Mon/Fayette Transportation Project. The Uniontown to Brownsville section provides direct access to Lucerne Township, Brownsville, and Republic in Fayette County, and eliminates the need to use substandard 2 lane roads. The project opens up these areas to future economic development and greatly improves proximity to I-70, I-68, and the Pittsburgh area. The close proximity to these areas makes it possible for residents to access larger employment areas and provides fast access to medical centers and retail centers.

The completed project includes 1.8 miles of expressway, the Bull Run Road Interchange, improvement and reconstruction of 5 local roads, and 2 dual mainline bridges and one bridge carrying the Bull Run Road Connector.
