Extension of Cranberry Woods Drive and Roundabout Intersection

This was the first modern roundabout to be constructed in Western Pennsylvania. The roundabout features a landscaped center island, ADA compliant crosswalks and curb cuts, functional aesthetic lighting, and appropriate directional signing. It is an excellent example of modern sustainable highway design (reducing fuel usage by approximately 30%), which will provide years of high level service.

Mine Safety Appliances (MSA) selected Mackin to provide design and construction services for Cranberry Woods Drive on the MSA Corporate Campus (Cranberry Woods) in order to provide direct access from Route 228 to the new Westinghouse Nuclear Design Center, which employs over 3000 engineers and scientists.

The project included a roundabout at the intersection of Cranberry Woods Drive and Longtree Way. The addition of the Westinghouse Nuclear Design Center, and the adjacent FRA retail and office complex development along Longtree Way, required innovative solutions to economically resolve traffic issues due to the significant increase in traffic at Cranberry Woods Drive / Longtree Way Intersection.”
