Lawrence County Greenways

Mackin’s Planning Team completed the Experience Lawrence County Greenways Plan Update in 2017 making Lawrence County the first in Pennsylvania to update its Greenways Plan. This plan was an implementation item from the Lawrence County Comprehensive Plan Update, which Mackin facilitated in 2016.

The plan serves as a tool to help County and municipal officials make future decisions and is based on residents’ and community leaders’ long-range vision for greenways, recreation, and trails in the County; focusing on realistic recommendations that the County can use to further protect important resources.

The Greenways Plan Update is the product of the highly collaborative and interactive process. A Steering Committee oversaw the research, engaged municipalities and other stakeholders in shaping the plan, and drove decision-making on future goals and priorities.

Implementation Projects:

  • Developed online, interactive land trail, and water trail map
  • Finalized conceptual renderings for Quaker Falls Natural Area and the Chamber of Commerce Boat Launch
  • Applied for funding to install kiosks at trailheads and river access areas to direct users to local businesses
  • Working on brochures to promote trails, greenways, and waterways in the County
  • Worked with two local municipalities to update zoning ordinances to encourage trail related amenities
  • Hired additional County staff to assist with plan implementation
  • Developed a maintenance plan for all County-owned facilities
  • Began education process for local municipalities regarding the benefits of bicycle and pedestrian friendly policies such as WalkWorks, Complete Streets, and Bicycle Friendly Communities
  • Pursuing the development of an ATV Park at the Mines and Meadows site
